The limestone hills of the Malay Peninsula, particularly those near urban areas, such as in the Kinta Valley, Perak, are seriously threatened by quarrying. There is an urgent need for at least one reasonably accessible hill in the vicinity of Ipoh to be preserved for the benefit for future generations. This paper describes the remarkable features of the Gunong Gajah Tempurung massif and its associated cave systems, Gua Tempurong, and highlights its potential as a site for both scientific research and recreation.
