Iron and steel are important raw materials of industry as will shortly be indicated, but thus far the contribution of this industry to the Malaysian economy has been small. In terms of supply, the Malaysian steel industry was able to provide only 532 thousand tonnes of steel products in 1983 and performed secondary processing on a further 400 thousands tonnes of steel to produce output with an estimated sales value of 859 million ringgit and value added of 162 million ringgit.
