Iron ore resources availability in Peninsular Malaysia

Iron ore is a basic mineral resources from which iron metal is extracted to make steel for numerous uses. As there is an increase in demand for iron ore resources, coupled with lots of enquiries from miners and investors, a quick reappraisal on the availability status of iron ore resources in the country seems indispensable. Most of the known high-grade iron ore deposits in Malaysia had been extracted by previous mining companies as their interest was only to mine iron ore resources that was above 60% Fe. Consequently, the lower grade iron ore were left behind and therefore were largely remainly unexploited. With the increase in iron ore prices in recent years, coupled with technological advancement in ore beneficiation and processing, and the high demand of raw materials by countries lika China, exploration and mining efforts to tap the lower grade ores are becoming more important. To meet the needs of explorers, miners and investors in terms of information pertaining to the present availability of iron ore resources in the country, the department initiated to embark a quick way of determining the availability of such mineral commodity. The study involves checking of previous records such as Prospecting Permits, Mining Leases, departmental archive reports, and other related documents. Information on iron ore potential areas in various states and districts were compiled, available data were evaluated, and the findings were interpreted in the form of prospectives areas on GIS maps for futher exploration or mineral mining development. This information is very useful to prospectors, miners, land-use planners, investors, and individuals who are interested in iron ore mining or for mineral concessions. Based on the study, there still seem to have many iron ore deposits available in the country. Even though some of the resources are smaller in tonnage and areas, the grade range from 30% to 70%, and thus are prospective and economic for small-scale mining. The study indicates that there are 179 prospective iron ore resources areas available in Peninsular Malaysia.
