520 _aField investigations have revealed that these clays which are residual in origin, are widespread in gently undulating areas underlain by argillaceous and fine-grained tuffaceous rocks. The thickness of the clays are variable, from 8 feet to some 52 feet, depending on the lithology of the underlying rocks and the topography. The laterite horizon encountered in most holes varies from 0 to 10 feet thick, thus reducing the thickness of usable clays. It is, perhaps pertinent to point out that in some areas narrows silty and sandy bands occur within the clay horizon.
