Serian town forms the transit point between the north-bound route from Kuching City or to the southeast Malaysian-Indonesian border crossing at Tebedu. The physiographic and the rapid pace of land clearing activities within the vicinity require proper guiding plan for the area future development. Shifting cultivation is widely practiced. The area is generally underlain by volcanic rocks and slope failures have been reported.
