Uniform Resource Identifier Preface.

This 19th edition of the annual series publication, Malaysian Mineral Trade Statistics (MINTRADE) 2014 provides an overview of the Malaysian's mineral and mineral-based trade statistics throughout the year 2014. The efforts to enhance this annual series of publication of trade statistics data was continued for the purpose of providing meaningful information to the public.

The Malaysian economy recorded a stronger growth of 6.0% in 2014 surpassing the 4.7% attained in 2013 with growth being driven by continued strength in private domestic demand and futher lifted by the improvement in external trade performence. This growth has been the highest achieved since 2010 and has places Malaysia among the fastest growing economies in Asia. This remarkable growth was attained amidst challenging condition. In 2014, Malaysian was struggling with multiple economic headwinds, including lacklustre economic growth in the develop markets of Japan, the United States and the European Union, a subdued developing market environment in China and ASEAN, plunging global oil prices, a depreciating Ringgit Malaysia and devastating floods in several states of Malaysia which affected commodity production and the two airline tragedies involving Malaysia Airlines in March and July. Fortunately, the diversified structures of the Malaysia economy and strengthened fundementals have the resilience of the economy and thus have placed Malaysia on a steady growth path.

As for minerals and mineral-based sector, Malaysia exports slightly decreased by 2% from RM 33.86 billion in 2013 to RM 32.98 billion in 2014. The imports were also decreased br a percentage of 6% from RM 73.76 billion to RM 69.14 billion. Despite the slightly decrease of overall performence of mineral trade 2014, Malaysia recorded a positive increase in some of the exports of mineral commodities. Among the mineral commodities that have shown significant increase in exports were ore and concentrates of aluminium, lead and zinc, fuller's earth, ground natural calcium phosphates and also rare-earth based products. Iron ore and coal still remained as the largest export and import of mineral commodities in 2014, respectively.

Last but not least, I would like to express my warm appreciation to the officers and staffs of the Mineral Economic Section of the Deparment with their continuous effort in publishing MINTRADE 2014. My gratitude also goes to the Department of Statistics Malaysia for kindly providing the data used in this publication.

By

MIOR SALLEHHUDDIN BIN MIOR JADID
Director General
Minerals and Geoscience Department
Malaysia.

November 2015
