Summary, etc. The excellent durability of gray cast iron pipe has been achived without the use of heavy duty protective coastings. Older cast iron mains with services records exceeding 100 years were installed without exterior or interior coating. After 1860, most cast iron pipe for water service was dip-coated with a relatively thin bituminous caoting, not for protection of the exterior from soil corrosion but to reduce rusting of the interior by certain types of water.
