The hills to the west of the Wan Yuen Mines are formed of granite whereas the lowlands to the east are of the sedimentary rocks, limestone and schist, limestone being pre dominant. The mines lie at the foot of the hills and are therefore on or near the contact between the granite and the sedimentary rocks.
