A preliminary investigation on the suitability of granite and other igneous rocks for use as dimension stone was undertaken in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka. One gabbro and 17 granite plutons were investigated.
Sisteen plutons are composed of grey biotite granite. Pink biotite granite was found only in the Batang Melaka pluton while black gabbro was found in the Bt. Larang Pluton.
Based largely on the attractiveness and uniformity of colour and texture, five plutons have been identified to have good potential for dimension stone. These are the Batang melaka pluton for pink granite, the Tampin, Melaka Pindah and Beroga plutons for grey granite and the Bt. Larang Gabbro for black "granite".
All the rock bodies investigated are affected by various degrees of fracturing and jointing. Due to the preliminary nature of this survey, futher work is needed to ascertain if blocks with a minimum size 1.0 m x 1.5 m x 2.5 m can be extracted.
The gabbro and granite bidies identified to have potential are recommended for futher investigation by interested private concerns. Surveys to determine the consistency of colour and texture at depth, the degree of fracturing, joint frequency pattern and therefore the volume of rock material suitable for dimension stone should be conducted.
