Summary of Geology
Tanah Merah area which is covered by Topography Map Sheet No 22 on the scale 1 :63,360 is located in the northwestern part of the Kelantan state. The study area in underlain by metamorphic rocks comprise Kemahang Granite, Stong Granite and minor intrusions. Temangan Ignimbrite exposed in the easternmost part of the study area.
The sedimentary rocks were deposited during the Permain to Triassic. The rocks had been metamorphosed as a result of the Triassic tectonic activities that were accompanied by the intrusion of the Kemahang Granite. The intrusion of the Stong Granite and small granitic stocks occurred during the Late Cretaceous subsequently followed by small instrusions.
The Permain Taku Schist is conformably overlain by the Triassic Telong Formation. The Taku Schist had been metamorphosed to medium grade metamorphic rock due to Triassic tectonic activities and the Late Cretaceous granitic intrusion. The rock unit is dominated by pelitic schist consist predominantly of quartz-miza schist, quartz schist and amphibbolite schist. Minor serpentinite intrusion cuts this rock unit at two locations. The Telong Formation is low grade metamorphic rocks comprise slate, phyllite, low grade schist and crystalline marble. The Jintiang Member consists of a variety of lava and pyroclastic composition. The Kemahang Granite comprises granite, granodiorite and syenite that ate mostly porphyritic, mesocratic and highly sheared. Lit-par-lit injectiona and contact metamorphism occurred within the contact zone between the granite and the surrounding rocks at several places. Eventually these rock units were uncomformably overlain by Recent alluvium deposits.
Geochemical survey reveals several potential areas for gold and base metal such as copper, plumbum and zinc. Most of the anomalies are concentrated in the area underlain by the Telong Formation originated from hydrothermal mineralization along veins. Alluvial gold is also promising.
