Older cast iron mains with services records exceeding 100 years were installed without exterior or interior coating. After 1860, most cast iron pipe for water service was dip-coated with a relatively thin bituminous caoting, not for protection of the exterior from soil corrosion but to reduce rusting of the interior by certain types of water.
